5 FACTS ABOUT ALGARVE WINES
With PortoBay Wine Week in the Algarve approaching, this is the ideal time to explore the charms of Algarve wines. Known for its beaches, the Algarve region is also an oenological treasure trove… Discover five facts about the wines from a region which is increasingly winning over wine lovers!
1. An ancient tradition
The Algarve has a long wine history dating back to Phoenician and Roman times. These civilisations brought the first vines and cultivation techniques to the region, and the tradition continues to this day. Traces of this heritage can still be found in the production methods that continue to be refined over time, maintaining a rich tradition of unique wines.
2. The perfect climate for wine production
With over 300 days of sunshine per year and a Mediterranean climate, the Algarve has the ideal conditions for growing vines. The Atlantic breeze cools the vineyards, resulting in balanced wines, with good ripeness and freshness.
3. A range of varietals
The native Negra Mole grape variety is typical of the region, but the Algarve also grows international varieties such as Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. This combination of local and global grape varieties provides a diversity of wines, from fresh whites to full-bodied reds.
4. Production of small quantities, with a focus on quality
Wine production in the Algarve is relatively small compared to other wine regions in Portugal, such as the Douro or the Alentejo. However, there is a growing focus on quality. Producers are investing in modern technologies and careful winemaking to create premium wines, which has led to an increase in the reputation of Algarve wines.
5. Four Protected Designations of Origin (PDO)
The Algarve region is made up of four sub-regions with PDO: Lagos, Portimao, Lagoa and Tavira. Each of these sub-regions offers unique styles and flavours, reflecting the diversity of the Algarve terroir.
