The Cliff Bay: the hotel overlooking the sea

THE CLIFF BAY: THE HOTEL OVERLOOKING THE SEA

This five-star hotel has managed to renew itself, without losing the classic identity that makes it so popular.

On a small promontory, in an area once filled with banana plantations, the dream of visionary hoteliers came true at the end of the 20th century. The Cliff Bay is a five-star hotel designed to offer holiday luxury and well-being in one of the world's tourist paradises: Madeira.
The hotel has adapted to the contours of the terrain, a sleek structure overlooking the sea. It now fits harmoniously into the landscape and with frequent renovations has managed to adapt to the times.
Its most recent refurbishment focused on the common areas, with the aim of making them lighter, more modern and comfortable. Large glass walls now offer a panorama of the outside and let in the light from the Atlantic.
This is clearly visible in the reception area, lower floor lobby and navigators lounge. The improvement work maintains the hotel’s classic style, but introduces a contemporary feel. The tones are lighter, the materials have changed, with less carpeting and more textiles and organic materials.

But the essence remains and will improve over time. This is how you make a classic, which never goes out of fashion. It is perennial; it has identity. And this is noticeable from the moment you arrive, with the familiar greeting from the team at the door and reception, to the quick and informative check-in, and the welcome in your chosen room.
Amongst the range of rooms at The Cliff Bay, the Atlântico suites offer a special touch. They look out on the Bay of Funchal and the entrance to the century-old port. They allow you to hear the sea and watch the sunrise. They are spacious, with all the comforts, king size beds and a living room, as well as small details that are extended throughout the hotel, such as Bulgary brand toiletries.

The welcome includes a bottle of champagne, water, a fruit basket and chocolates. And there’s nothing better about this offer than to admire the view from the balcony.
In the bedrooms, the décor reproduces the idea that runs through the PortoBay chain. Soft tones and organic textures inspire comfort, are gentle on the eyes and inclusive to all tastes, even though it is hard to please everyone.
With Madeira's climate, the sea is a must. Swimming is possible practically the whole year round in clear waters with great visibility, which reflect the turquoise blue of the sky and the emerald green of the sea.
The solarium is ample but spread across the whole floor to offer areas for relaxation and privacy. The support team is available at all times to adjust your sunshade or lounger. In addition, the lifeguards can provide information about water conditions and ensure safe swimming, as this access to the sea is certified as a beach.

A few floors above, the hotel also has an indoor pool, which is actually a hybrid as it opens to the outside. Here there is a new solarium area with views of the sea and the bay. This is next to the gym and the spa, offering a wide range of treatments and even a suite for couples.

The Cliff Bay is served by generous gardens, with plants of many different origins. This is where the bar is located, serving afternoon tea or drinks throughout the evening and offering live entertainment.
You can also gain access to the terrace of the Rose Garden, the hotel's main restaurant, which has undergone renovation to turn it into an à la carte establishment with signature cuisine.

Chef Élio Olim and his team have created an international menu, with a strong Mediterranean inspiration which changes every day of the week, offering fare from around the world. Each day focuses on different ingredients. In addition, there are chef specials that change regularly. Various dishes stand out, but the Rose Garden version of fish and chips should not be missed. It is made from black scabbard fish tempura style.
On arrival, it is worth ordering one of the signature cocktails, which could include Madeira wine and more, or beers made from fermented grapes. There is a full wine list and has several options by the glass. The sommelier, Roberto Drummond, guarantees a detailed and knowledgeable service.
The Rose Garden is not the only restaurant at this hotel. The Cliff Bay is also home to Il Gallo d'Oro, where Chef Benoît Sinthon has earned two Michelin stars. A visit is strongly recommended.

At lunchtime, the Blue Lagoon, next to the solarium, takes centre stage. There is a range of snacks if you are looking for a lighter meal, and these can be served in the pool area. But there is also a menu and several suggestions of the day, always presented in a friendly and professional manner by the team. This restaurant offers many specialties prepared in the Josper oven, including vegetables. It's a place where the focus is on flavour.

Guests at The Cliff Bay also have another dinner option, which is the Avista, the signature restaurant at the neighbouring Les Suites. It offers both Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. Guests staying in superior rooms at The Cliff Bay can also have breakfast here. This varied breakfast option is also available at Il Gallo d'Oro, with a buffet and several à la carte options.

But the Rose Garden is once again the main restaurant when it comes to breakfast. You can enjoy your first meal of the day outdoors in the mild weather, or in the dining room. There is a full buffet and several gluten-free and lactose-free options, plus a menu for more special requests, including different types of eggs.
This is an ideal hotel for holidays, designed to offer peace and quiet. Despite being in a city, it faces the sea and the sounds you hear are from the sea air and the gulls. Rest and tranquility are guaranteed. Comfort is a certainty. On top of all this, the friendliness and warmth of the team make all the difference.
