CHILDBIRTH MASSES: CHRISTMAS HAS BEGUN IN MADEIRA
The sun hasn’t risen yet, but the churchyards are already full. Traditional Christmas carols echo through the air, accompanied by the scent of hot cocoa and sandwiches of pork marinated in wine and garlic (the typical “carne vinho e alhos”). By 5 a.m., the churches were already packed for the first Childbirth Mass...
Yesterday marked the first of nine Childbirth Masses, which will be celebrated until December 23, a tradition of great importance that kicks off the Christmas celebrations on the island.
These masses commemorate the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary – each one represents a month of gestation and takes place before the Midnight Mass, which celebrates the birth of Jesus. Held daily between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., they symbolize the transition from night to day, representing the arrival of Jesus as the light of the world.
Neither the cold nor the early hour deters anyone... These are sung masses, and after the religious celebration the churchyards transform into spaces for sharing! There is coffee and hot cocoa, homemade liqueurs are offered, and the traditional poncha is never missing. Honey and coconut cookies and the famous pork sandwiches with wine and garlic (typical regional specialties) are part of the "menu," accompanied by carols spontaneously sung by various choirs in the churchyards.
If you’re visiting Madeira during these dates, don’t miss the chance to experience this truly unique and memorable tradition. Come and participate in this Madeiran custom!
