Right next to Funchal, you will find the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, a place Sir Winston Churchill chose to paint during his visit to Madeira. Then take the Girão cable car, which at 580m above sea level is one of the highest promontories in Europe.
After passing through the village of Ribeira Brava, climb to the only flat spot on the island of Madeira, the plateau of Paúl da Serra. Continuing along this route, on the lush north coast you will find Porto Moniz and its natural rock pools by the sea.
Then there is Seixal, a wine-producing area, which has a beautiful beach, and soon you will arrive in São Vicente where you can visit the Caves and Volcano Centre. On the way back, and at an altitude of 1007 m, at the top of the Encumeada, you cross the central mountain range that divides the north from the south of the Island.
