Its narrow streets and picturesque houses dating from the 15th century ooze history... the old town is ideal for those who want to experience the dynamic feel of the city, art, lifestyle and traditions whilst being close to the sea, or who want to get to know the history of Funchal through the various museums there.

In this area you can also explore São Tiago fort, built in the 17th century to protect the city from pirate attacks and later extended in the 18th century. It was used for military purposes until 1992, when it was turned into a cultural centre. The Museum of Contemporary Art is currently located here.

The Corpo Santo Chapel and the Church of Socorro are rich in religious art, offering you peace and contemplation.
