CABLE CARS

There are several cable cars in Madeira, but two of them are especially designed for visitors to Funchal. The Monte Cable Car is a stone's throw from Funchal and connects Avenida do Mar to Monte. The Jardim Botânico Cable Car connects the Monte (Babosas) to the Botanical Garden.

Monte is the place par excellence for Madeira villas and palatial houses with gardens - some are private, others are open to the public, such as Quinta do Imperador. Do not leave the Monte without visiting its beautiful church, known for the tomb of Charles I of the House of Habsburg, the last Austro-Hungarian emperor, who died in Madeira where he had gone into exile. 

From the Monte, another cable car goes down, descending the magnificent Vale das Babosas. On your arrival, visit the Botanical Garden. An alternative to descending by cable car, and involving much more adrenalin, are the traditional basket cars.
